The Ride

LYRICS - THE RIDE

Play

Daddy made a livin' drivin' a truck and he'd chase that dotted line
From Dallas, Texas he'd head on up drivin' north on 35
He'd hang a right on 44 till he passed St. Louis' arch
Then north again on 55 Chicago then he'd park

With the radio on he'd pass the time from town to town he'd sing
That good old fashion country kind and a little bit of western swing
Then often times with blue bird skies if the wind would blow just right
Through pops and cracks he'd find the Opry, live on Saturday night

He'd say play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road
He'd say play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road

That big ol' Caterpillar purred and those 18 wheels would hum
Fiddles played and banjos rang and the guitars picked and strummed
Dad sang along with them blue grass songs that high and lonesome sound
They helped him keep his shiny side up and the tires on the ground

He'd say play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road
He'd say play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road

He sang George Jones, Johnny Cash and David Allan Coe
Dolly, Porter and Ernest Tubb, Merle and Bill Monroe

He sang play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road
Why don't you play, won't you play me down
Play, play me down the road

Started In The Kitchen

While she was still at work I took the kids to my mom's
The wine was chillin' the steaks were thawin'
Candles on the table flowers in a vase
Man you should have seen the look on her face
Shortly after dinner and her favorite chocolate cake
She blew out the candles, I got up and cleared the plates
I had the revelation standing at the sink
Fellas, doing the dishes is more romantic than you think

It all started in the kitchen after washing up the dishes
The way that she took off her apron I could tell what she was thinking
A little huggin' and a kissin' took us all the way to Heaven
Talk about your happy ending
It all started in the kitchen

The next morning after breakfast we were running late for church
I forgot my Bible and she forgot her purse
In the middle of the sermon she handed me a note
But church was not the place to be reading what she wrote
She was scooting closer giving me the cue
To put my arm around her right there in the pew
With her eyes she dared me with that come and kiss me look
And I was thanking God and mama taught me how to cook

It all started in the kitchen after washing up the dishes
The way that she took off her apron I could tell what she was thinking
A little huggin' and a kissin' took us all the way to Heaven
Talk about your happy ending
It all started in the kitchen

Enjoy The Ride

I was 15 I guess and he was born in 1935
Most of his life was spent
In boots and spurs breaking colts to ride
Retired in a saddle shop
Just 10 miles down a blacktop road
From where I grew up back home

He was an artist with the leather and knives and hammers
That stamp those oak leaf swirls
He had a cowboy philosophy
About gold and glory and lonely rodeo girls
He'd say ain't nothing like a setting sun
On the back of a horse when you let him run free
Take it from me

Enjoy the ride
Like it's your last
Son this old life sure goes by fast
Sit the saddle tall
And if you should fall
Ain't no thing at all
Just dust yourself off
Forget your pride
Enjoy the ride

The doctors gave him 6 months
And that was 5 long years ago
But he was tougher than dirt
And it was just like him to not let anybody know
The friends and neighbors all gathered round
Pastor Bill laid him down to rest
The wind whispered from the west

Enjoy the ride
Like it's your last
Son this old life sure goes by fast
Sit the saddle tall
And if you should fall
Ain't no thing at all
Just dust yourself off
Forget your pride
Enjoy the ride
Enjoy the Ride

Sweet Little Her

I like living my life just as simple as I can
Never looking past today that's always my plan
I'm just a regular kind of guy there ain't no doubt
As a matter of fact there's only one little thing
That ever made me stand out

And that's her, sweet little her
Cute little dress in a crowd
Turn your head right around
That's her
She's my baby, she's my lady
It's easy to see the best part of me
Is sweet little her

Just like everyone else I've had my bad days
I come home mad at the world cause nothings gone my way
And just when I think it's more than I can hack
At the end of my rope there's only one I know
Who can cut me a little slack

And that's her, sweet little her
Cute little dress in a crowd
Turn your head right around
That's her
She's my baby, she's my lady
It's easy to see the best part of me
Is sweet little her

That Sweet Day

This world is not, it's not my home
Listen to that hymnbook song
Sometimes it's a hard life
But it's not long
This world is not, it's not my home

Deaths cold wind gonna blow our way
And some I love are getting old and grey
And one day soon we'll all fly away
Deaths cold wind gonna blow our way

And that sweet day the rock of ages
Will meet us on the other side
And that sweet day he'll call us brothers
There'll be no tears left to be cried

So take to heart the words I've said
For your atonement he died and bled
To save his people from eternal dread
Take to heart the words I've said

And that sweet day the rock of ages
Will meet us on the other side
And that sweet day he'll call us brothers
There'll be no tears left to be cried

That Sweet Day
